Keep ‘em Spinning…Through the Snow!
Leadville’s winter snow bike race series kicked off last Saturday, Jan. 19 with En Fuego, a night race at Copper Mountain, Colo. This was the first race of the year for the Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Race Series, hosted by Leadville’s Cloud City Wheelers.
The race saw 82 participants start out in cold, but perfect conditions. According to race organizers, “Bikes were raced, and fun was had.”
Chad Melis was the first one across the finish line with a time of 48:53, almost two minutes behind the inaugural 2012 En Fuego time of 46:52, set by Jordan Carr of Gunnison. The first female finisher was Leigh Tofte 1:06:16, again almost two minutes behind last year’s top female Melissa Thomas at 104:15. Seven racers also took on the course with singlespeeds. There are 3 races left in the Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Race Series: the Tennessee Pass Night Jam on Feb. 2, followed up by the Mineral Belt Mayhem on March 2 and the popular East Side Epic on April 13. The Cloud City Wheelers, who host the entire Winter Mountain Bike Race Series, advocate that winter racing is a great way to keep up riding and racing during the off-season.
The Cloud City Wheelers is a Leadville club dedicated to providing bicycle activities to promote individual health and recreation. The Wheelers also support education and advocacy to help promote a more bicycle friendly environment and a more livable community for members, bicyclists, and the community at-large.
