Epic Snow, Challenging Course Greets Racers
On Saturday April 13, twenty-five racers “tired up” to the start line for the East Side Epic, the last in the Winter Mountain Bike Series for this season. The fresh snow along with “burly ascents and gnarly descents”, made for an epic race.
Winner Max LaFortune (#421) and 2nd Place finisher Chad Melis (#411) discuss the EPIC race after a sprint to the finish line! It was a one second difference for the win!Keeping his winning streak alive, Maxfield LaFortune sprinted to the finish line in first place with Chad Melis hot on his back tire with only one second separating the two top finishers. LaFortune was also the first to cross the finish line for the Mineral Belt Mayhem held in Leadville on March 2.
New this year was a slightly more challenging course up near the Venir Mine. “We changed up the course slightly this year to add more challenging components,” said Race Organizer Sterling Mudge.
The club also held a raffle to raise funds for trail building. Congrats to Mark Wallace for winning that beautiful Wheelers’ edition Bully frameset. Wallace has been riding the races from the beginning in the mid 90’s and “he has earned this frame,” said Mudge.
The Cloud City Wheelers, who host the entire Winter Mountain Bike Race Series are a Leadville club dedicated to providing bicycle activities to promote individual health and recreation. The Wheelers also support education and advocacy to help promote a more bicycle friendly environment and a more livable community for members, bicyclists, and the community at-large.

Since we’re still in “winter” mode up here, here’s a great video produced by Colorado Mountain College students about this year’s Rail Jam held in Leadville last March 23. Enjoy!
