Twin Lakes Fire 100% Contained, Cause: Lightening
On Wednesday June 19 at approximately 10 a.m., lightening started a fire south of Twin Lakes Village in the US Forest Service Area just west of Quail Mountain, according to Lake County Sheriff Rod Fenske.
The initial plumes of smoke started appearing south of Twin Lakes Wednesday morning. The incident is now 100% contained. Photo: LLCFRAs of late afternoon on Thursday (June 20) the fire was reported as 100 percent contained. Initial response was made by the Leadville/Lake County Fire Rescue crews but they were immediately accompanied by a ten man crew with the US Forest Service who combated the fire on land.
Additional air assistance was called in resulting in several bucket douses made possible by scooping up water from Twin Lakes Reservoir. After the initial attack on the fire, the firefighters also requested two saw crews to cut some of the dead trees. Sheriff Fenske reported yesterday that forest service crews were in the process of mopping up the incident.
Leadville and Lake County continue under a Red Flag Warning today as gusty winds continue to be the weather pattern, particularly in the afternoon. Remember the area is also under a Stage One Fire Ban, which includes all U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands. For a reminder of what those restrictions are please click HERE.
