And if you can’t catch tonight’s show, there are a couple more planned down south: Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Salida SteamPlant; and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Buena Vista Clearview Community Church.
Power Outage Exercise Planned for June 6
The Emergency Responders in Leadville & Lake County will be conducting a training exercise June 6, 2014 dealing with a simulated power outage covering several states for an extended period of time.
According to Mike McHargue, Emergency Manager for Leadville/Lake County, this exercise will allow us to practice many situations associated with a long-term power outage and provide the opportunity for the public to think through their own response and preparation to a power outage. This exercise will include an evacuation center for providing information to the public, a shelter for those who need a place to stay, and assistance to the special needs population in Lake County.
This exercise will be planned and executed with the assistance of Homeland Security. There are many reasons why extended power outages could occur, including an aging and over-taxed electrical power delivery system, EMR’s (Electro Magnetic Radiation from a Nuclear Explosion), and terrorism. Extended power outages have major impacts on our lives and this will be a great opportunity for emergency responders and the public to think through these potential impacts and plan accordingly.
The Lake County Office of Emergency Management provides monthly training opportunities to ensure emergency responders in Leadville and Lake County are well trained to handle any situation that may occur here. The public is invited to obtain a copy of the Lake County Community Preparedness Handbook, available at the City and County offices, and review the preparedness sections and the section on power outages. This book is a great resource to assist the public in being prepared for a possible emergency situation.
