Forest Service Road Closed for Bridge Repair
Well, at least they waited until AFTER the busy Memorial Day Weekend, but be advised! The U.S. Forest Service, San Isabel National Forest, Leadville Ranger District will temporarily close Forest Service Road (FSR) 391 from Tuesday, May 27 through July 12, 2014 during the replacement of a bridge over North Lake Creek. The Lake County bridge has decaying timber girders and is structurally deficient.
FSR 391 is located approximately 7 miles west of the Town of Twin Lakes on Highway 82. The bridge is at mile marker 0.1 on FSR 391 and is used to access approximately 15,000 acres of Forest Service System lands including the Lake Creek Trailhead for La Plata Peak’s north and west sides.
An alternate trail to access La Plata Peak is at the West Winfield Trailhead. It is located approximately 12 miles west of Highway 24 on Chaffee County Road 390. Additional directions and a map of the alternate trailhead are available from the Leadville District Office, or on the web site at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/psicc/ldv.
Directions to Alternate West Winfield Trailhead: This trailhead is at 10,380 feet and provides access to La Plata’s south side. Turn west from U. S. 24 onto Chaffee County 390 (dirt). This junction is 14.9 miles north of the stoplight in the center of Buena Vista, 4.3 miles south of the U.S. 24 – Colorado 82 junction and 19.3 miles south of the West Sixth – U.S. 24 junction in the center of Leadville. Go west on Chaffee County 390 for 11.8 miles to Winfield. There are many informal camping areas along this road. From the center of Winfield, go north (right) for 60 yards, then go west (left) on the rough but passable road for an additional 0.4 mile to the Winfield Cemetery. Continue west for an additional 0.2 mile; here the road becomes rougher. Park on south (left) side of the road in an open area.
