The 7th Annual Blaze The Belt event will be held on Leadville’s Mineral Belt Trail this weekend, Sept 20-21. The official time trial event will be on Sunday, Sept 21, beginning at 1 p.m. While the main event involves long boards, there are alternate class divisions which may include a short board, luge, rollerblades, and a bicycle class.
“Basically anything with wheels that is safe enough to carry your butt down the hill is okay, just so long as it is safe,” stated Blaze The Belt Organizer Donny Connor. Helmets, pads, and spray on skin in a can are recommended for riders. Spectators can find the best viewing on the MBT’s “S” Curve off the Dump Road, you’ll see all the cars parked along the road, follow the cheering!
On Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. there will be a celebration and friendly competition at Leadville’ new Huck Finn Skate Park. Come and see some of the best riders in the region put on a show of tricks and jumps, as they vie for a variety of great prizes. After the Huck Finn Skatepark fun, the crowds head up to the “S” Curve (see above) for the Slide Competition.
Registration for all competitions and information can be found at the Tennessee Pass Café (TPC) at 222 Harrison Avenue on both Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. – Noon.
This year, there’s also an added Friday afternoon bonus event: A Skate Scavenger Hunt. Join the fun, starting at 4 p.m. at the Dr. Ryde Skate Shop at 121 E. 9th Street in Leadville. Teams will be given clues to various treasures to be found around Leadville.
The Blaze The Belt weekend will culminate with the After-Party at 5 p.m. on Sunday at TPC with live music by local favorites, Leadville Cherokee. Cash and prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each category.
