On May 23 the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad‘s (LCSR) will blow the whistle on its 27th year in business. So “All Aboard” to catch up with what’s happening on the Leadville train.
This year, there are more packages and special rides than ever. If you and your family/group are looking for some Rocky Mountain adventure, take your pick from the “Raft and Rail” or the “Zip Line and Train” package deals.
On the Zip Line and Train combo, guests will enjoy a scenic train ride up through the San Isabel National Forest. Then once at the end of the line, your group is taken up for Zip Line fun, traveling all the way down to base camp at Top of The Rockies Zip Line. This four-hour tour is perfect for adults and children, giving them an opportunity to see untouched wilderness. This package deal is available throughout the train season, for more information and to book your Zip/Train tour visit the Top of the Rockies website: HERE.
Or maybe you’re up for some white water adventure, with a half-day with Noah’s Ark Colorado Rafting; afterward kick back on a 2 ½ hour scenic train ride in the afternoon. The “Raft and Rail” packages run daily between May 23 and August 17; please call ahead to book. 1-866-386-3936.
If you’re looking to add to your train experience, choose from one of these special rides. The BBQ Train will take place on July 12 and departs for a special two-hour evening ride, enjoying some award-winning BBQ along the way. Last year, this trip sold out quickly, so make reservations now. Or consider the LCSR’s new offering this year: two Stork Curve-Climax Specials with a light supper. These will be 3 ½ hour trips that go to the end of the line. Travel over the Arkansas River at its headwaters and see the beauty of the sunset. Mark the calendar for these two special rides on August 21 or September 4; the train departs at 4:30 p.m. Please call to make reservations, as seating is limited. 1-866-386-3936.
Of course, the 2015 season will also see the return of the train’s popular Wildflower and Photo Special rides. Join their experienced wildflower tour guides for a 20-minute hike through pine forests, aspen groves and open meadows. View a multitude of varieties of wildflowers at the water tower. Some flowers sighted include Indian Paintbrush, Lupine and wild strawberries. You may find anything from the “local” deer to a mushroom in a wet marsh. Remember hiking shoes, a water bottle and camera. The train ride will depart at 10 a.m. and arrive back at the depot at 1 p.m. This hike is for people of all capabilities and interests please.
The Fall Photo Specials are offered three different weekends in September when the aspens are putting on a show all their own. Get that special shot framed by Colorado’s autumn beauty! This tour goes all the way, an additional mile and a half allowing you to see the full beauty of the Arkansas River Valley and will take 3 hours. Bring your camera and your jacket! For more information on any of these special packages or rides, call 1-866-386-3936 or check out more details on the LCSR website.
Fun can break out at any moment aboard the Leadville Train
One of the ways that the Leadville train shows its ongoing support to the local community is through several train ride fundraisers. There are a couple of special ones on the horizon.
Steampunk Leadville will kick off the summer season for National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum (NMHFM), with a progressive day /night benefit event on Saturday, June 6. The day begins at 12:30 p.m. with a 1 p.m. departure on the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad for a scenic afternoon train ride. Once the trains returns about 3 p.m., participants will disembark and head downtown for a mosey and some shopping. At 5 p.m. the evening’s events – food, libations, Tesla Coil demonstrations and other entertainment – will begin at the Mining Museum. The evening will finish off with a cash bar and the band Ye Ole Dirty Bastards performing in the convention center ballroom. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mininghalloffame.org or by calling the museum at 719-486-1229.A tunnel of golden aspen await Fall passengers on the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad.
The Grapes and Grains on Rails fundraiser for the Advocates of Lake County is in its third year, and if the first “All Aboard” is any indication, this trip will sell-out. How can you go wrong when it’s good wine or beer and cruising on the Leadville train, taking in the evening sunset? This special “Local Libations on the Locomotive” scheduled for July 10, isn’t offered at any other time. Enjoy a selection of Colorado wines and beer from Crazy Mountain Brewing Company, and hors d’oeuvres. Reservations required: 1-866-386-3639 (Leadville, CO and Southern Railroad) or (719) 486-3530 (Advocates of Lake County) for tickets. Proceeds benefit the Advocates of Lake County whose mission is to assist any victim of crime, violence or other traumatic event.
The train also offers special rides for Leadville students and prizes for the summer reading program with the Leadville library. So this summer when you hop on for a ride, or send visiting friends and relatives, remember you’re also saying “All Aboard” for the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad’s support of the Lake County community! Now that’s something to blow the whistle about!
