Grab the Pole, Grab The Line, It’s Summertime Fishing!
With Memorial Day Weekend kicking off the official start to summer, the fishing season is underway. And even though it seems like the high country continues to get more snow than is melting, the fishing is still good and alpine lakes are filling up fast.
Here’s the first fishing report of the season for the Upper Arkansas River (Between Leadville and Buena Vista) brought to you by Tim Hill with Colorado Fly Fishing Guides located in downtown Leadville.
Upper Arkansas River (Between Leadville and Buena Vista) – We have had a moisture laden spring in the Upper Arkansas River Valley and the river reflects that with moderate, but still manageable flows. Air temperatures have remained cold at night and mild during the day and we have been gaining high altitude snowpack as opposed to losing it, which has put run – off on hold for now. Nymphing with stone flies followed by caddis pupa or bwo emergers is your best bet. Late morning to early afternoons have sometimes generated some dry fly action with blue wings and midge.
