Leadville Loppet Hosts “Lucky #13” This Sunday, Feb 21
This Sunday, Feb. 21, The Leadville Loppet will be celebrating its “lucky #13”, according to race organizers. This high-altitude Nordic ski race serves as the annual fundraiser for Leadville’s historic Mineral Belt Trail (MBT). The race course travels through a rolling forested terrain trail network, leading racers on to the MBT, where climbs and descends await, along abandoned rail grades left from Leadville’s mining era. It’s a one-of-a-kind course which should be laden (and groomed) with fresh snow come Sunday.
Registration is currently open online for classic and freestyle 44K, 22K, & 10K distances, plus a 5K and 1K fun race, where costumes are encouraged! Online registration will close the night before the race, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. In-person registration & packet pick up will be held at the college gymnasium on Saturday evening from 5 – 8 p.m. Packets may also be picked up the morning of the race from 7 – 8:45 a.m. Please note there will be no race day registration.
Other highlights of this “fun”raiser are the awards ceremony, held after the competition in the gym with homemade soups and chili galore!
They will also host a free wax clinic provided by Leadville’s Tim Hill of Alpine Ski & Sport, the night before on Saturday, Feb. 20, 6 – 8 p.m. in the Cloud City Ski Hut at Dutch Henri Hill, located off Highway 24 south of town. During the race, athletes may also be tracked via a mobile app provided by It’s Your Race. For race info and registration: LINK.
