More About the Lake County Civic Center Association
By Donna Schaefer, LCCCA
Four decades ago a group of people interested in preserving, protecting and promoting Leadville history joined together and purchased the old Carnegie Library on 9th and Harrison. A multitude of volunteer hours by that group and new members thereafter resulted in the LCCCA (Lake County Civic Center Association) owning and operating the Heritage Museum and The Old Church Center for the Arts and Humanities as well as sharing ownership of the Leadville History Collection (historical photos, books, maps, etc.) housed at the Lake County Public Library.
You may have heard of the LCCCA. You may have been in the Heritage Museum. You may even have been in the Old Church or used the access to historical materials at the library, but you probably don’t know that the Heritage Museum and The Old Church survive purely by membership, donations, grants and income generated by tours of the museum.
Both The Old Church and the Heritage Museum are old buildings in constant need of repair and maintenance. The Old Church especially is in need of some major structural work. At this time, there is only a small board of directors and very few volunteers making a valiant effort to keep the museum and the church a contributing part of the Leadville community.
This is a plea for help! How, you might ask? Become a member of the LCCCA. Membership starts at $20 for a family. It requires nothing else, but by being a member, you can tour the museum at no cost and you will have helped to generate the income required for insurance and other necessities. You will also be invited to the annual meeting/dinner and will be able to vote on board members. The LCCCA used to boast nearly 300 members. The membership now stands at less than 100. Your membership COUNTS!
Another opportunity to help! If you are interested in the Old Church being what it was intended (A center for the Arts and Humanities), why not plan an event to hold at the Old Church and help to improve what the building can offer.
Are you proficient or experienced in grant writing? Your skills are needed. Are you interested in preserving Leadville history for people to see up close and personal? The join the organization and give some hours each year by volunteering at the museum or church. Are you a leader and/or organizer? Your vision and energy is needed!
Unsure whether to join or get involved? Attend a meeting. Meetings are held once a month on the fourth Thursday at 7 p.m. Check it out! Meetings are held at the Heritage Museum May to October and at the home of Donna and Carl Schaefer during the “cold” months. Please call Donna or Carl at 719-486-2148 for more information.
Please show your support for the above mentioned buildings and Leadville history by becoming a member today!
