Grab the Pole, Grab The Line, It’s Time to Go Fishing!
With Memorial Day Weekend just a week away, it’s the official kick-off to the summer fishing season. And even though it seems like the high country continues to get more snow than is melting, the fishing is still good and alpine lakes are filling up fast.
Here’s the first fishing report of the season for the Upper Arkansas River (Between Leadville and Buena Vista) brought to you by Tim Hill with Colorado Fly Fishing Guides located in downtown Leadville.
Upper Arkansas River (Between Leadville and Buena Vista) – The Upper Arkansas River Valley has thawed out making the river fully accessible. However, cooler weather has prevailed leaving flows low and perfect for the walk/wade angler. The weather pattern also has been a factor in bug activity with the cooler, cloudy weather supporting strong blue wing and midge hatches. The river bottom is teeming with caddis pupa and there have been small, dispersed hatches of caddis during periodic warmer weather. Nymphing with caddis pupa patterns and blue wing emergers can prove effective throughout the day. Try dry/dropper rigs as the hatch comes on mid-morning to early afternoon.
