FREE National Park Day for President’s Day
Every Presidents Day the federal government gives America a gift by letting them visit their precious parks free of charge! And for Leadvillites, that just might be the perfect excuse to leave the shovel by the back door and travel to lower – and warmer – elevations to take in one of these natural beauties – including the four parks and 3 monuments in Colorado!
The national parks (and monuments) in Colorado include Rocky Mountain National Park, which covers 415 squares miles and more than 300 hiking trails; Mesa Verde, with its thousands of archaeological sites; Great Sand Dunes, which offers a diverse landscape and even “sand sledding”; and Black Canyon of the Gunnison, where the river has carved through rock over millions of years.
National monuments in Colorado include Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction; Dinosaur National Monument across the state border from Vernal, Utah; and Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument near Colorado Springs.

The Great Sand Dunes in the San Luis Valley offers the mountains and “the beach,” and today is fee-free in honor of Presidents Day.
If you can’t take advantage of this Presidential opportunity today, here are some dates when you can take advnatge of the next free days: April 15-16 and 22-23 for National Park Week, Aug. 25 for National Park Service’s birthday, Sept. 30 for National Public Lands Day and Nov. 11-12 for Veterans Day weekend.
Political Round-Up from Colorado’s Golden Dome
It’s also halfway through the Colorado 2017 Legislative Session and time to check in with Leadville and Lake County’s state representatives under the golden dome. The following are links to Colorado Senator Kerry Donovan and State Representative Millie Hamner. Be sure to let them know how they are doing!

Big crowds and a swell of patriotism could be found at Ski Cooper over Presidents Day Weekend where Leadville’s ski hill also paid tribute to the Tenth Mountain Division on Friday. MORE Photos: Leadville Today/Brennan Ruegg
