Rain (Snow) or Shine: Lead Vegas Shines Bright
By Ted B. Halley, Leadville Today Contributor
A fresh layer of snow has settled on Leadville’s main drag. And while many may want to draw the curtains until the sun returns, rebel-rousing rockers know that there’s still some fun to be had in this one-stop-light town! So let the neon lights of Lead Vegas be your shining light to good times! Here’s the low down on the nightlife scene.
It’s Friday night in Lead Vegas and it’s snowing, should be most of the weekend. So if you’re looking to get out and have some fun tonight, you don’t have to go very far. Bundle up and then hope the entertainment does the same and makes it to the stage on time!
With northern New Mexico getting some snow from this storm as well, keep your fingers crossed that Zephaniah Stringfield makes it up from his southern home.
He’ll take to the Scarlet’s stage at 10 p.m. tonight April 28. Performing with raw intensity and moving dynamism, Stringfield sings stories about his travels from the SF Bay Area to New Mexico and beyond, weaving biblical references and archetypes of traditional folklore with stories of highways, girls and greyhound buses. His songs echo bluegrass and country music, rock-a-billy and the blues, but his clever lyrics and up-front delivery are both modern and relevant. Chances are he’ll leave The Cloud City with a few more stories to tell and a few more songs to sing.
If you feel like singing your own song, then the historic Pastime Bar & café I s your place. Tonight is Karaoke Friday at 9 p.m. Sing your own songs, or if you’ve got the guts sign up for kamikaze karaoke and sing the song that you randomly pick out of a jar. Show everyone in Leadville how brave you are and PICK! PICK! PICK!
It’s back to the Scarlet on Saturday, Apr. 29. Lighting up the Lead Vegas marquee are special guests The Ragabonds and Funk Trek. These Omaha natives are full of fun and excitement with great rhythm and sound, music that will make you want to dance all night and leave feeling great! Music starts at 8 p.m.!
A reminder that every Tuesday is Geeks Who Drink at Periodic Brewing, starting at 6 p.m. You bring the brains, they’ll bring the beer. Geeks Who Drink is a Denver-based company that holds weekly trivia matches across the country. Quizzes cover everything from celebrities in trouble to wordplay to bad television. Play in teams of up to six or by yourself if you’re some kind of savant. If you want to play but don’t have a team, come anyway, they can usually get single players recruited onto an existing team. Periodic Brewing is located on E. 7th Street in Leadville.
So there you have it, the Leadville Today Lead Vegas report. It’s that time of year, when most everyone is over the snow and waiting on sunshine and shorts. Until then, get out and support it live music . . . . in fabulous Lead Vegas! And remember, if you’re on social media, be sure to give LT a nudge about your event and share you’re pictures when out having a good time in #LeadVegas.
