“Music In the Schools” Performance on Friday
Perhaps you’ll hear them warming up their vocal cords this Friday, Apr. 6 in the Lake County High School (LCHS) Auditorium. Or maybe you’ll hear your favorite LCHS student humming a little different tune after the upcoming educational workshops for LCHS choir students. But no doubt that music lovers will be glad to hear them hitting that high note as The Breckenridge Music Festival’s “Music in the Schools” Program and Central City Opera bring an evening performance of En Mis Palabras / In My Own Words to Leadville this Friday, April 6.
The public is invited to follow the story of Ana Maria, a young Mexican girl torn between her family’s culture and American society. It is a powerful story about finding your own voice as the audience follow Ana Maria’s struggle to find her true self.
Friday evening’s bi-lingual opera performance, in Spanish and English will follow educational vocal workshops at Lake County High School with the choir students. While in Leadville, vocal artists of Central City Opera’s Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program will lead educational workshops for choir students at Lake County High School.
Founded in 1932, Central City Opera is the fifth oldest professional opera company in the country and is renowned for its exquisite world-class productions, competitive and robust young artist-training program, and creative educational and community engagement activities.
The Breckenridge Music Festival’s “Music in the Schools” Program serves between 3,000 to 4,000 students annually in Summit, Lake (Leadville) and Park (Fairplay) counties presenting classical, traditional and cross-cultural musical arts experiences that include performances, workshops and residencies to enhance the musical arts curriculum in the schools.
Through this musical arts enrichment program, BMF works to support arts education as a critical component of educational excellence for students from pre-K through grade 12. The “Music in the Schools” programs are funded thanks to grants from The Summit Foundation and Climax-Molybdenum. “Music in the Schools” coordinators worked with Central City Opera to present the in-school workshop for Lake County High School choir students as well as the evening public performance of En Mis Palabras.
