Xcel Begins Upgrades in Leadville
Five-Year Program for Gas Service Underway
Along with a big snow season, Leadville and Lake County saw a record number of gas leak reports mostly contributed to old and aging gas meters/lines and the neglect in keeping them clear of snow and ice. One situation resulted in the temporary evacuation of homes in the West Park neighborhood, which is where Xcel Energy will begin its newly rolled-out replacement program.
Xcel Energy started its 5-year project to renew the natural gas system that delivers natural gas to the Leadville community earlier this month. This is part of Xcel Energy’s Residential Gas Service Replacement Program -a statewide program to modernize infrastructure, improve service reliability, and maintain the safety and integrity of the natural gas system.
Work will occur in five different phases. (See below for phase map.) The first phase will begin in 2019, and will focus on the north end of the city. The approximate boundaries for the work are below:
- Between Mount Massive Drive on the west and North Poplar Street on the east
- Between Mountain View Drive on the north and 11th Street on the south
They plan to start the 2019 phase of this project in mid-May and anticipate completing work for this phase by late-October. However, inclement weather and other circumstances may cause delays. Generally, crews will work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the possibility of some Saturdays, also from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. To reduce overall construction impact, much of the work will be done through underground drilling or boring in streets. Some work may also occur on side and adjacent streets, and in yards. If the pipeline to your home needs to be replaced, Xcel must be in your yard to do the work. If it is necessary to work in your yard, you will be notified, and landscaping will be restored to its pre-construction state.
Additionally, if your natural gas meter is located inside your home or business, we must move it to an outside location to meet industry standards. If this is the case, Xcel will contact you directly.
Please call Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-4999 to discuss any concerns or to ask any questions you may have about this project.
