A Flag Day Honor: “The Gold Star”
Fallen Local Hero Honored in Song
Leadville has found its way into another song. Therefore, this Flag Day – June 14 – seemed like an appropriate time to tell this new tune’s tale, since it has a flag theme.
This latest song with a Leadville Connection is an original from singer/songwriter and US Army Captain Alex J. Longo. If the name rings a bell, it’s because Longo is no stranger to America’s highest city, visiting regularly, both as a performer and keynote speaker at Leadville’s Memorial Day Service held annually at the Lake County Veterans Memorial. In fact, it was at the event last month, when Longo debuted his latest tune entitled: “The Gold Star.”
In his latest release, Longo honors the military heroes who gave their lives in service of their country. As many know, a gold star on a flag represents a family member who died during Military Operations. In the final verse of “The Gold Star,” Longo honors one of Leadville’s hometown heroes: Lance Corporal Marine Nick Palmer.
In this Leadville Today video production, LT matches up Longo’s inspirational words with images and video from the recent Memorial Day Services and Fallen Heroes Motorcycle Run. Enjoy! And special thanks to Alex for the inspiration.
