Leadville Boom Days Tallies the Results
Leadville Boom Days took place in Leadville last weekend and aside from an action-packed weekend of fun and festivities, there were plenty of contests. Here are some of those results along with some photos. Leadville Today will continue to update this post as more contest results come into the newsroom. Thanks to all the volunteers and congratulations to all the winners!
Leadville Pack Burro Race – 2019
The International Pack Burro Race was Sunday’s big-ticket event and it did not disappoint. Historic Harrison Avenue was lined with spectators as dozens of burro race teams (human and donkey) took on the lofty challenge in the long and short courses. Initial posts through the Leadville Boom Days social media platforms reported that Leadville’s Marvin Sandoval and his mini-burro Buttercup took the top podium spot. Their Leadville victory takes them one step closer to the Triple Crown Championship since the team secured their first-leg victory at the Fairplay race on July 27. The Buena Vista Race this Saturday will close out the season – stay tuned! Go Marvin – and Buttercup!
In the end, their Leadville win clocked in at 3:45:38. Almost five minutes behind was second-place finisher Hal Walter and Full Tit Boogie with a 3:49:57 finish time. Rounding out the podium was Louise Kuehster and her burro Pandora at 03:53:48.
With a much thicker field of 56 burro racing teams, it was Roland Brodeur with Burro Flash taking top prize with a 02:37:53 time. Steve Kuehster with Finnegan came in second place at 02:37:54, Also following suit in the short course, the third billing went to top women racer Amber Wann with teammate Burro Cheeto clocking a finish time of 02:45:56.

And The Winner Is . . .
Leadville Boom Days Burro Race raffle chair, Noreen Dewhirst reports that Toby Atencio is the lucky winner of $800 for the Burro Race raffle time guess contest. Congratulations! He lives in Leadville for the summer with his daughter Loretta Vigil.
Atencio is 95 years old, turning 96 on August 30th. He has been buying raffle tickets for as long as Boom Days has been selling them. The actual winning time of Marvin Sandoval and Buttercup is 3:45:37.7. Mr. Atencio guessed 3:45:38.2, only half a second away!
FYI, he also has a son named Toby Atencio. The committee sold approximately 1000 tickets and there were 22 tickets that were 3:45, including one by his daughter Loretta, and one from last year’s winner.
Thanks to everyone who bought a chance – your money goes toward good works in Leadville Today!
