Food Drive Collects Throughout October

Neighbors Helping Neighbors Kicks Off Today
With the colder months just around the corner, local food banks need to be replenished. To that end, the Neighbors to Neighbors Food Drive gets underway today, October 1.
This year marks #13 for organizer Mabel Bogeart who coordinates the local food drive every October to replenish local food reserves. The efforts will benefit the food reserves at the Leadville Senior Center, St. George Church, First Presbyterian Church of Leadville, and Holy Family Catholic Parish.
Bogeart said that the reason she started the food drive years ago was that she noticed that youth organizations that used to require kids to provide community service through food drives, were no longer collecting donations.
“Years ago, when everyone was losing their jobs, there was a big hit to Leadville’s food banks. Nothing was coming in and everything was going out,” explained Bogeart. So she took it upon herself, with some help from various community members over the years, to make sure that the food banks remain stocked.
Bogeart has kept the food drive alive ever since then, pretty much as a one-woman-show, but it’s also the generosity of the community that really shines through. Here’s how you can help: Food donation boxes will be at Safeway, Twin Lakes Inn, Pueblo Bank & Trust, Community Banks of Colorado and Saturdays. Money jars will be located at the all three Banks in town along with Stop-n-Go on Mt View Drive, The Elks Lodge and Saturdays. The food bank drive runs from October 1 – 31.
“Remember, what you give, comes back to you,” says Bogeart. Those interested in donating directly may also contact Mabel Bogeart at mbogeart@co.lake.co.us. or 719-486-0259.
